Academic Year 2009

Guasmo School

Seven years ago two high school students from First Congregational Church who were participants in the summer mission build called Adopta Una Familia saw the need to help young people in the barrio of Guasmo continue their studies through high school.

Most families could not afford the matriculation fee and school uniforms and supplies necessary to attend school on a regular basis. They started a project and committed themselves to the task of sponsoring 10 students. They continued this for two years and we have enlarged the program to include 55 children.

Two years ago another past participant, upon graduating from college, committed to work in Guasmo for a year and a half and create a Tutoring Program as an enrichment to the regular school program. The kids meet after school and have a designated time for home work and then an enrichment component in social studies, science, math or English. During this time we established a summer internship for college students to go and live in Guasmo and work with the tutoring program.

The program is now run by three high school graduates who had received Educational Grants and now are teaching as part of a work study and being scholarshiped to college.
