Looking for a creative environment enabling you to voluntarily practice your faith beyond Sunday pew, resulting in a meaningful, interesting and challenging one to one ministry? Consider becoming a Caregiver, joining other members of our church family performing one or more of the following assignments.
Friendly Visitors ~ Share a pot of tea at her home while actively listening to your new friend.
Medical Escorts ~Transport and accompany a neighbor to/from a medical appointment.
Meal Preparers ~ Prepare and deliver a home made meal to a neighbor on the mend.
Home Helpers ~ Perform errands, grocery shop, light chores, read mail or light housekeeping.
Telephone Callers ~Initiate on a regular basis calls of friendly reassurance to an otherwise isolated homebound neighbor.
Respite Providers ~ Following a brief period of training provided by Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Greater New Haven, relieve a family member briefly from a grueling 24/7 schedule. If you have been a caregiver to a family member, you might have reservations about involving yourself in such a capacity, but wait.........Caregivers on assignment here at First Congregational Church provide services free from familial politics and power struggles to a person most appreciative, enabling each Caregiver to come away from her/his "work" assignment refreshed, with good reason to see one's own challenges in proper perspective. (Perhaps that perceived mountain of a personal problem will in time be seen as a maneageable uphill trek affording pleasant views) Caregivers often find themselves in company with hearty champions who over decades have survived seasons of plenty, scarcity, heartbreak, joy, depression and other perspective enriching gifts.
If you feel you ought or should provide assistance to those in need, perhaps Caregivers is not for you. If, however, you can and want to help your neighbor, Caregivers' Coordinator Alfred Mahan will be most pleased to discuss and answer any questions you might have. Feel free to call him at home (203-488-2992) or church office (203-488-7201).
